From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Stephen Parry again had the edge over his rival James Hickman in the heats of the 200m butterfly at the National Swimming championships at Crystal Palace yesterday. Parry won the 100 metres in the pair's first meeting on the opening day. Yesterday morning he was the fastest qualifier, recording a time of 2min 01.03sec. Hickman was second best with the Welsh record holder Mike Watkins third. Caroline Foot, the oldest competitor at the championships, showed her younger rivals the way home in the 100m butterfly heats. The York swimmer covered the two lengths in 1min 03.41sec to finish 0.78sec ahead of Germany's Marietta Uhle who at 17 is 15 years her junior. The British record holder, Martin Harris, cruised into the final of the 50m backstroke in pole position. His time of 26.94sec was 0.93sec slower than the record he established three years ago.
