Sports letter: Kiwis deserve more respect
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Sir: The most unedifying spectacle associated with the current cricket Test series has not been anything that has taken place on the field, but the ill grace shown by those who comment on cricket in England.
New Zealand were denied (by the weather) a second Test victory in assured style, but are still being short-changed by journalists who ought to know better.
New Zealand have beaten India, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in recent series and yet in the Wisden World rankings they languish below Zimbabwe - who have won one Test series in their history! They were subsequently whitewashed by South Africa, but then so were the West Indies. (South Africa, amusingly, are still ranked below the Windies). I'm also rather tired of being told by English cricket writers that New Zealand lack stars, style, and talent. A team that provides two excellent centuries [Nathan Astle and Craig McMillan] before declaring just short of 500 deserves a little more respect.
