MARTINA NAVRATILOVA, playing in her first tournament after a 10-week lay-off, defeated Japan's Naoko Sawamatsu in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals of the Italian Open yesterday. The No 2 seed won 6-4, 6-4 in a two-hour match interrupted for three hours by rain.

JO DURIE, the British wETHER write erroromen's No 1, has withdrawn from the Great Britain team for next week's Federation Cup qualifying competition in Nottingham because of a knee injury. Durie, who has a stress fracture of her left kneecap, will be replaced by 27-year-old Julie Salmon, from Brighton. Salmon, whose only previous Federation Cup appearance was in 1988, is expected to partner either Clare Wood or Amanda Grunfeld in the doubles. Monique Javer completes the line-up.
