Fernandez is still not fully recovered from a stomach operation, while Maleeva has flu. Jana Novotna of the Czech Republic, this year's defeated Wimbledon finalist, is now the top seed, ahead of Anke Huber of Germany and Mary Pierce of France. The organisers also announced last night that Britain's Jo Durie had been given a place in the main draw.
