Gomez, winner of the 1990 French Open and formerly ranked No 1 in doubles, retired from professional tennis in May. The 33-year-old Ecuadorean beat Guillermo Vilas, of Argentina, winner of four Grand Slam titles in the 1970s, 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 15 minutes in a hotly disputed match which ended after midnight.

AUSTRALIA'S preparations for this weekend's Davis Cup final against Germany suffered a setback when Richard Fromberg, their main singles player, suffered a muscle strain in his ribs. Neale Fraser, the Australian captain, said Fromberg will undergo a fitness test today.
