Sporting digest: Rugby League

Swinton Lions were forced to free 11 players yesterday and scrap their reserve side in order to meet the salary cap for next season.

St Helens have signed the prop Mike Loughlin, the 16-year-old brother of Bradford Bulls' former Great Britain centre Paul, from local amateurs St Helens Crusaders on a five-year contract.

Castleford have put the second row forward Ian Smales and the utility back Jamie Benn on the transfer list but the second row forward Lee Harland has signed a new two-year contract with the Super League club.
