The former Rangers captain, Richard Gough, has completed his move back to the Ibrox club from the American side Kansas City Wizards.

Cambridge United have abandoned plans to leave the Abbey Stadium and instead will redevelop the ground. The Third Division club have bought adjoining land and will transform the Abbey into an all-seat, multi-purpose sports stadium.

Swindon Town's captain Mark Seagraves is out for up to six months with a pelvic problem. A club spokesman said: "The specialist told him it would take a long time to clear and that could be between three to six months."

Tommy Soderberg has been named as Sweden's new coach following Tommy Svensson's decision to resign after his side's failure to qualify for the World Cup finals.

The Bayern Munich defender Markus Munch has joined Newcastle United on a week's trial. The 25-year-old, who has found first-team opportunities under Italian coach Giovanni Trapattoni hard to come by, could be available for around pounds 600,000. He played for Newcastle reserves on Monday in a 2- 1 win over Chesterfield.

The former Italian international Antonio Manicone is to have a trial with Southampton. The 30-year-old midfielder is out of contract at Internazionale and available on a free transfer.

Italy have chosen Naples to host their home leg of their World Cup play- off against Russia on 15 November.
