The veteran Australian Commonwealth Games official, Arthur Tunstall, was caught in a new controversy yesterday after making a racist joke about Aboriginals. Tunstall reportedly told a joke about two Aboriginal athletes at the Commonwealth Games' Association executive board on 29 April. Tunstall caused a storm at the Commonwealth Games last year over his remarks about disabled athletes.
Britain's Steve Jones finished seventh in 35min 38sec in the 19th annual Lilac Bloomsday 12km road race in Spokane, Washington. The winner was Kenya's Josphat Machuka in 33:41.
Peter Fleming, of Scotland, finished fifth in the Pittsburgh Marathon in 2hr 16min. The race was won by John Kagwe, of Kenya, in 2:10:13.
Douglas Walker, who has represented Britain at under-23 level, recorded the fastest time in Britain so far this season when he won the British Universities 200m title in 20.53sec at Meadowbank Sports Centre, Edinburgh, yesterday. Gary Jennings equalled Sebastian Coe's 14-year-old 400m championship record with a time of 46.95 sec.
