Tonsillitis has forced him to abandon his plans to improve on his 1992 silver medal in the 3,000m. Other Britons who have dropped out are Melanie Neef (400m), Gary Brown (800m), Yinke Idowu (long jump) and Jackie Agyepong (60m hurdles). Rachel Kirby (triple jump) and Craig Winrow (800m) have been added to the team.
