Nick Barmby of Tottenham missed the vital penalty in the shoot-out, in which 30 spot kicks were taken. The teams were level at 1-1 after 90 minutes; Middlesbrough's Jamie Pollock scored England's goal.
RHYS WILMOT, Plymouth Argyle's former Arsenal goalkeeper, has signed for Grimsby Town. A League transfer tribunal will decide the fee.
KEVIN DRINKELL, the former Norwich and Rangers striker, has completed his pounds 150,000 move from Coventry to Falkirk. He becomes player-coach at Brockville Park.
