Bernie Slaven, the former Republic of Ireland international, has retired following a troublesome back injury. The 34-year-old striker played for Middlesbrough, Port Vale and Darlington.

Alain Sars, the French referee who took charge of Rangers' European Champion's League defeat at Steaua Bucharest on Wednesday, said last night that the Rangers defender Alan McLaren and Steaua's Damian Militaru were both sent off for "violent conduct" after an exchange of elbows. Their automatic one-match ban could be extended by the European governing body, Uefa.
