Liam Williams did not complete training on Wednesday as the British and Irish Lions full-back picked up a tight hamstring on the same day that it was confirmed that Jared Payne will play no further part on the tour of New Zealand.

Wales back Williams took part in a Lions training session in Queenstown on Wednesday morning, only to leave the session after feeling his hamstring tighten up towards the end of the session. However, it is not thought to be serious and the Saracens-bound full-back is expected to take a full part in training on Thursday, which will take place back in Auckland after Warren Gatland names his side for the third Test against the All Blacks this Saturday.

Williams is expected to remain at full-back for the decider at Eden Park, though Gatland could look to make changes for the final match of their 10-game schedule in order to bring in fresh legs after last Saturday’s thrilling 24-21 victory in the second Test.

However, one player who definitely won’t be involved is Ireland centre Payne, who will miss the match due to the migraine issues he has been suffering from over the last week. Payne remained in Wellington after the second Test for tests on the headaches that he was suffering from, with the rest of the squad departing for a rest and recovery trip to Queenstown, and Gatland confirmed on Wednesday that Payne will not be in contention for selection this weekend.

"While the findings of Jared's tests have been normal he still has migraine and will not be fit to train until his symptoms have settled,” said Gatland. “The specialists are happy that the symptoms are not concussion related and he is expected to recover fully. We wish him a speedy recovery.”

Gatland will use Wednesday’s session in Queenstown – staged against the beautiful backdrop of the Remarkables mountains – to choose his last squad of the 2017 tour that will attempt to secure the Lions’ second series triumph in 129 years this weekend, where a victory will guarantee a first win over New Zealand since the famous 1971 tour.

The All Blacks will be out for revenge though, and they have not suffered back-to-back defeats since 2011, with Steve Hansen also set to name his squad on Thursday where he will announce who will replace the suspended Sonny Bill Williams at centre.
