Malvern beat Old Hamptonians 8-6 as the junior cup final, now sponsored by Pilkington, was played as a curtain raiser to the senior final at Twickenham for the first time, writes Chris Rea. Hamptonians' control of the rucks and mauls was the determining factor in a scrappy first half. They took the lead with a penalty by Garreth Pritchard after 35 minutes. But then Malvern reverted to their usual open game and mounted a series of enterprising attacks from which Dave Grundy went over in the corner for the decisive try.
