Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

FEATHERSTONE ROVERS are ready to put their Great Britain centre, Paul Newlove, on the transfer list, but say that it will cost pounds 1 million to buy him, writes Dave Hadfield.

Newlove has turned down what the club describe as the best offer they have ever made to anybody and will be out of contract at the end of this month.

'Paul Newlove is a unique talent and is without doubt the best centre in the world,' Terry Mullaney, a Featherstone committee member, said. 'We believe he is worth a million pounds and that is what clubs will have to pay if they want him.'

John Dorahy, Wigan's newly arrived coach, admitted to an interest in Newlove. 'He's an excellent player and I think he would be absolutely sensational in a really good side,' he said.

Wigan are undeniably in the market for a centre and Dorahy said: 'I want to get the best man for the job, but the pit is not bottomless.

Wigan set the world transfer record of pounds 440,000 when they bought Martin Offiah from Widnes 18 months ago, but Dorahy described that as 'special circumstances'.

Widnes are to allow their prop, Harvey Howard, to join Eastern Suburbs in Sydney on a short-term contract, provided he is back in time to prepare for the first match of the new season on 29 August.
