Bath Rugby forwards take on Red Bull Formula 1 car

What happens when a Formula One car takes on a rugby scrum? Horse power vs human power?

To answer the question Redbull has produced a video featuring their Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo and the eight-man Bath rugby scrum.

The footage shows the three-time grand prix winner driving the full force of his 800 bhp and 642 kg RB8 car against the combined 900kg of forward power at the Fairleigh House training base.

With a fair amount of toing and froing, players like Leroy Houston, Henry Thomas and David Denton made the most of their muscles to beat the car. The result was a tightly fought contest.

Henry Thomas, said: “It’s not every day you get to do something like that. We love testing ourselves on the biggest stage but not many players can say they’ve scrummed down against a Formula One car”.

The rugby team used a specially-designed scrum machine during the contest while the car had a special flat nose fitted.

For Ricciardo the unexpected contest was also exciting: "Seeing the rugby players take their positions behind the scrum machine right in front of me was somewhat…strange. But my competitiveness kicked in, the Honey Badger took over, and I was determined to beat them!”
