From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Two of Bryan Robson's summer signings for Middlesbrough, Emerson and Fabrizio Ravanelli, scored in a thrilling 4-1 win over West Ham before a record 30,060 crowd at the Riverside Stadium.

Emerson gave Middlesbrough an early lead with a powerful 30-yard shot. Robbie Mustoe added a second from close range before half-time and then Ravanelli increased the advantage after the break following a neat Juninho pass.

West Ham hit back through Michael Hughes but Middlesbrough soon regained control and showed their superiority with a fourth goal in the final minute. Phil Stamp hit the target shortly after his introduction as a substitute for Juninho.

Matthew Le Tissier crowned a fine individual performance with a last- gasp equaliser against Nottingham Forest to give Southampton a share of the points in a 2-2 draw at The Dell. Forest wasted a two-goal lead earned by strikes from Kevin Campbell and Dean Saunders. Richard Dryden pulled one back for the Saints with a header from Simon Charlton's corner after the break and then Le Tissier levelled with a right-foot shot from another corner.
