Noland set to make long-awaited return in King George after workout at Kempton
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The odds against Noland winning the William Hill King George VI Chase on Boxing Day remain pretty long, even before you factor in the snow still lying over the frost blankets at Kempton. On the adjacent all-weather track, however, he was yesterday able to complete an utterly surreal preparation for the big race.
Noland, whose career has been spoiled by protracted absences, resurfaced in one of the special "bumpers for jumpers" provided on the Flat to help jumps trainers beat the freeze. It was his first public appearance since he won the John Durkan Chase at Punchestown just over two years ago and while he could not match the speed of his stablemate, Pepe Simon, he stayed on with such gusto for second that Paul Nicholls was inclined to bring him back at the end of the week.
The trainer's priority for the King George remains Kauto Star, who had managed two canters in the morning despite the conditions at Ditcheat. "There will be no excuses for fitness," Nicholls promised. Beneath the blankets, the track remained raceable, and Kempton is preparing to bring in earth-movers should the snow fail to thaw.
