From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Leighton Aspell celebrated a second straight victory at the Grand National as he powered Many Clouds to the finish line.
A year ago, Aspell won riding 33-1 shot Pineau De Re, but this time around he had elected to ride Many Clouds who set off at 40-1. The focus had surrounded the final outing in the National of AP McCoy, who was riding favourite Shutthefrontdoor, before he retires at the end of the season.
Rebel Rebellion led from the early stages, but as Ryan Mahon faded The Druids Nephew hit the front and looked to be gaining strength. However, The Druids Nephew fell at the 26th fence of 30, with Many Clouds hitting the front, and it was suddenly a shootout to the finish with McCoy urging Shutthefrontdoor on.
Soll faded on the inside, and was soon joined by the favourite in heading backwards as Saint Are and a surging Monbeg Dude took up the challenge.
But Many Clouds held on, and gave Aspell his second consecutive victory to mark a rare achievement for the jubilant jockey.
