Jim Bolger saddled the consistent Idris to defy top-weight in the Group Three Meld Stakes at the Curragh yesterday, writes Ian Davies.

Patiently ridden by stable jockey Kevin Manning, Idris was somewhat fortunate to get through on the far rail to deliver what proved to be the decisive challenge as the two British raiders Song of Tara and Prince of Andros were duelling up front.

Despite carrying a 6lb group penalty and slightly stamina-suspect over 10 furlongs, Idris was good value for his near-length victory over another strong finishing local hope Predappio.

Song Of Tara, running here instead of the King George at Ascot, was favourite and led briefly under strong driving from Pat Shanahan before the principals arrived to quicken past on either side of him.

Catch The Blues also defied top weight with a similar late surge under Christy Roche to take the pounds 20,000 Rockingham Sprint Handicap and gain compensation for her Royal Ascot defeat by Atraf.

Song Of Tara's jockey Shanahan had better luck earlier when deputising for Michael Kinane aboard Dancing Fred in the Los Angeles Handicap.
