Corey Pavin yesterday shot a six-under-par 66 to win the richest individual prize in golf, the Million Dollar Challenge at Sun City, South Africa. The US Open champion won by five shots from Nick Price with a 72-hole total of 276, 12 under par.

Bernhard Langer finished in third place at five under par, while Scotland's Sam Torrance shot a closing 72 to stand a creditable fourth on his first appearance in the event. Local hero Ernie Els dropped six shots on the front nine, and his 78 sent him tumbling down the leaderboard to three over par, tied for seventh with the defending champion Nick Faldo and Costantino Rocca of Italy.
