Newcastle set sights on Ginola
Kevin Keegan, the Newcastle United manager, is set to take his close- season spending past the pounds 13m mark by snapping up the French international David Ginola, from Paris St-Germain. Keegan is ready to offer pounds 3m for the 26-year-old midfielder, also reported to be a target for Barcelona.
England are through to the quarter-finals of the women's World Cup after beating Nigeria 3-2. They finished second in Group B and will now play the Group A winners and reigning European champions, Germany, on Tuesday. Karen Farley opened the scoring in the 10th minute, heading home a corner from Marieanne Spacey, then provided a brilliant cross for the second which Karen Walker nodded in, before completing the scoring six minutes before half-time when she netted from a rebound.
Sheffield Wednesday face a compensation battle with their former manager Trevor Francis, who is suing the club for unfair dismissal. Francis said: "The chairman, Mr [Dave] Richards, sacked me on 20 May and told me he wanted a quick and amicable settlement of my contract. I am sad that he has totally failed to negotiate."
West Bromwich Albion are set to reject an approach by two businessmen who want to invest pounds 4m in the Midlands club. Keith Bradshaw and Mike Cartwright want alterations to the way the First Division outfit is run, including the appointment of a full-time managing director, but their plans have met with opposition from the present board.
