From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Red Bull driver Mark Webber was fastest in the first practice session for the Brazilian Grand Prix today, ahead of title contenders Rubens Barrichello of Brawn GP and Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull.

Formula One leader Jenson Button was seventh in his Brawn GP.

Webber clocked 1 minute, 12.463 seconds at the 4.3-kilometer (2.6-mile) Interlagos track, 0.411 ahead of Barrichello and 0.469 in front of Vettel.

Button, who has a 14-point lead in the drivers' standings and needs only a third-place finish on Sunday to clinch his first F1 title, had a best time of 1:13.141 after the 1-hour practice session under heavy clouds.

The second session will take place later in the afternoon.
