A Nascar race descended into chaos on the final lap after two drivers collided battling for victory, resulting in a British Bulldog-style brawl after the chequered flag had dropped.

The Nascar Camping World Truck Race went down to the wire on Sunday as Cole Cluster attempted to hold off John Hunter Nemechek with a place in the championship-deciding Chase on the line. Having already won a race this season to guarantee himself a spot in the Chase, Nemechek could have elected to hold station in second and allow Custer to take the spoils in order to book his place in the title shootout.

But Nemechek clearly had other ideas and the true racer inside him wouldn’t settle for second. As the pair rounded the final corner at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Nemechek pushed Custer off the road and onto the grass.

Having already hit Custer, Nemechek then – intentionally or otherwise – turned left and hit Custer again, this time pinning him against the outside concrete wall and preventing him from overtaking before they reached the finish line.

With both cars off the road, the finish was one of the most bizarre endings seen in motor racing, especially given the man in third also spun off as the carnage in front unfolded. But it didn’t stop there.

Nemechek attempted to celebrate the win but Nascar officials refused to give him the chequered flag after launching an investigation into the finish. Suddenly, an irate Custer charged at Nemechek and leapt at his rival, with Nemechek having just enough time to adjust and attempt to tackle his angry opponent in what replicated scenes often witnessed in schools in the form of British Bulldog.

Custer wrestled Nemechek to the ground before being dragged clear of him, and Custer’s crew chief also had to be kept separated as he tried to confront the race winner – with Nascar eventually declaring that the original result would stand.

A furious Custer told Motorsport.com afterwards: “He hit me coming to the second to the last corner — then hit me again and that sent me into the grass and he just drove me up into the fence. I was expecting it — kind of — because he’s raced a lot of people like that but it’s a shame. It was a great opportunity for us to get into the Chase — and he took it away from us.

“It’s going to be a rough year for him.”

But Nemechek claimed he was innocence, and stressed that had the tables been turned, Custer would’ve done exactly the same to him because “rubbing is racing”.

“I caught [Custer’s No.] 00 there. We didn’t wreck him for the win, rubbing is racing,” said Nemechek. “If I had been in the same spot, he would have done the same thing to get a win. You have to do everything you can here to get a win.”
