MAX SCIANDRI TO RIDE FOR BRITAIN
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Max Sciandri, the Derby-born rider whose parents are Italian, will ride for Britain in the Senior World Championships in Colombia, next month. Sciandri, winner of last month's Leeds International Classic, took out a British racing licence earlier this year after being repeatedly ignored by Italy's selectors.
Two riders came to blows during the fourth stage of the Tour of Spain yesterday, which was won by Marcel Wust of Germany with the Frenchman, Laurent Jalabert, remaining race leader. Storm-force winds and rain compelled judges to call a halt after only eight of the 164km and restart the race 71km further on in Villalba, shortening the stage to 85km. The weather improved but tempers, at least among two riders, did not and a fight broke out between the Venezuelan Leonardo Sierra and Spain's Ramon Gonzalez Arrieta.
TOUR OF SPAIN (Tapia de Casariego to La Coruna) Fourth stage: 1 M Wust (Ger) 5hr 2min 39sec; 2 S Zanini (It); 3 L Jalabert (Fr) both same time. Leading overall standings: 1 Jalabert 17hr 6min 14sec; 2 A Olano +12sec; 3 A Zulle 21.
