Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Henning Tewes, the German junior international, scored two smartly taken goals to assure Oxford of their fifth consecutive win in the 95th University Match at Reading yesterday.

Oxford won 14 penalty corners and Cambridge not one and the Dark Blues won by four goals without reply, but nevertheless the significance of the match, not just for the privileged few who won their Blues, but their respective supporters who produced hockey's largest crowd of the season, and for the commitment of both teams, cannot be overestimated.

Oxford's trouncing of Cambridge began from the first whistle with Will Kendall making inroads down the left, supported by Jon Pratt overlapping with great purpose, but it was not until the 17th minute and their fourth penalty corner that Adam Laird put Oxford into the lead, finishing off a four-man move.

Cambridge, thanks to stout defending by the sweeper Russell Cake, Oxford's inept shooting and a brilliant hand save by Pawel Piotrowicz, held the score to 1-0 as the teams turned around.

Tewes put Oxford further ahead three minutes into the second half when he walked the ball in from Creswell's pass and then collected his second in the 26th minute. The German would have collected his hat-trick a minute later, but for a good block by Piotrowicz. However, Matt Barr was on hand to score from the rebound.

Cambridge, with their captain Tom McCarthy forced further and further back into defence to stem the Dark Blue tide, created few chances, their best coming 13 minutes into the second half. The Dutchman Johan Schulten sent Andy Sainsbury away on a powerful run to set up Rob Stevens, but his wild mis-hit trickled wide.
