Hockey: Reading in doldrums
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. In a weekend of major surprises four previous cup winners exited in the fifth round of the EHA Cup. It was particularly bleak for Reading, last season's league champions, who went down 3-2 to Teddington in Saturday's league game and yesterday went out of the cup. After Scott Ashdown had given them a second-minute lead at Barford Tigers they were struck down with a goal in each half from Dharminder Singh.
Hounslow and Southgate also said farewell to this season's competition, Hounslow going down 4-2 at Canterbury while Southgate lost 3-2 to Beeston.
Cannock will have been one of the few clubs to have really enjoyed the double-banked weekend. A 6-2 win against Guildford kept them one point ahead of Southgate at the top of the Premier League and they came from behind yesterday to beat Old Loughtonians 4-3 to go into the quarter-finals of the Cup.
