Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

ROB HILL, Great Britain's leading goalscorer in the Barcelona Olympics and the man whose goals played a significant part in taking Havant to two PizzaExpress National League titles, has announced his return to the Hampshire club for next season.

Hill, a 27-year-old Somerset farmer, left Havant for the Bristol-based Firebrands after the Olympics, scoring 18 of their 33 league goals which took them to fifth place in the First Division.

Oxford University at the weekend joined Sheffield, Gloucester City and Edgbaston as Regional League winners who will take part in the PizzaExpress National League play-offs, to be held at Olton, Birmingham, over the weekend of 2-4 April. This leaves just the A Division of the Peroni South Premier and the Norwich Union East to be decided.

With the leaders, City of Portsmouth, and second-placed Gore Court only managing to draw, Oxford, with a convincing 5-0 victory over Old Bordenians, took the title with a game in hand to become the first University side to contest the play-offs. Oxford's goals came from Jason Ralph, with two, Adam Laird, Bruce Ellison and their captain from New Zealand, Grant Edwards.

'This is the first League Oxford have ever won and we will be leaving nothing to chance to ensure we win through at the play-offs to the National League,' Edwards said. 'Fortunately we will be able to start next season with at least nine Blues.'

Anchorians were down 1-2 to Eastcote when they heard that the Peroni South Premier A Division leaders, Maidenhead, had been beaten 4-1 by Hampstead.

Motivated by the news, they scored twice within a minute through Andrew Simmons and Mike Gillett to win 3-2. A win against Ramgarhia in a re-arranged game on Saturday would now give them the title.

In the Norwich Union East, Redbridge need to beat Westcliff by 17 goals this weekend to prevent Crostyx taking the title.
