Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Hardcastle adds bronze to gold

Sarah Hardcastle, world champion for the 800 metres freestyle, added another medal to her collection when she finished third in the 400m freestyle at the World Short Course Championships in Rio de Janeiro yesterday. Her bronze medal left her with mixed emotions. "I'm disappointed yet at the same time pleased," she said. Hardcastle, 26, was up against Claudia Poll, who won the 200m in a world record time the previous day and was a hot favourite to take her second gold. Costa Rica's Poll won her second title in a meeting record of 4min 05.18sec. Second place went to Holland's Carla Geurts in 4:06.20, with Hardcastle third in 4:07.20. In the 100m breaststroke, Samantha Riley of Australia set a second world record, shattering the old mark in 1:05.70. China's Liu Limin came from behind to win the women's 100m butterfly in a world record of 58.68 seconds.
