The Open Championship in numbers

The Open Championship is upon us once again.

The oldest tournament in golf returns to Carnoustie, one of the most fearsome courses on the rotation, for what promises to be a true test of the golfing elite. The weather won't help either. After a hot summer the Angus course is baked to a crisp giving even the tour's shortest hitters a chance to blast their way around this week. But watch out for those fairway bunkers.

World number one Dustin Johnson, defending champion Jordan Spieth and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy all hoping to be in contention come the back nine on Sunday. Don't rule out a charge from Tiger Woods either with the course conditions playing into the favour of the 14-time major winner.

Rafa Cabrera Bello hits a gorgeous approach to within a few feet and moves to two-under par. 

It is 30 years since Seve Ballesteros was victorious at Lytham St. Annes, and Cabrera Bello would love to mark the anniversary with a Spanish victory. The 2017 Scottish Open winner tied for fourth last year and could contend again this.

Erik Van Rooyen is hot. A long birdie putt finds the hole at 15 for his fifth birdie and the South African is the outright leader in his first major championship.

Talking of South Africans, lurking on two under is Brandon Stone, the 25-year old who is in some form. He very nearly shot a 59 in the final round of last week's Scottish Open, but his 60 was enough for a four-stroke victory.
