Ryder Cup 2023 LIVE: Day 3 scores and updates as McIlroy helps Europe hold off USA comeback to secure victory
Europe saw off a late thrilling late fightback from the USA to get over the line
Europe have won the Ryder Cup after holding off a late fightback to defeat USA 16.5-11.5 on a dramatic final day of singles at Marco Simone.
The Europeans were led from the front by an inspired Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland and Rory McIlroy, who put captain Luke Donald’s side on the verge of victory.
But the Americans showed fight and character with the middle of the leaderboard turning into a sea of red, forcing Europe to hold their nerve and close it out.
After Max Homa denied Matt Fitzpatrick, who missed a putt to clinch the cup, the winning half-point was secured by Tommy Fleetwood down the stretch, getting Europe past the magic 14.5 mark with his victory over Rickie Fowler. And the final match was left to Shane Lowry and Jordan Spieth, with the American snatching a half surrounded by chaos on the 18th as joyous European fans started the party in Rome.
Follow all the reaction and latest updates from Rome as Europe win the Ryder Cup.
Scheffler levels it up
Jon Rahm v Scottie Scheffler A/S (14)
Neither player is letting each other breathe in this encounter. Rahm edges ahead, and Scheffler pins him back with a superb approach to the 14th.
It’s conceded and Rahm can’t make the birdie putt to equal him. Back to all square and it’s just starting to get a little bit interesting here.
The projected scoreline reads 16-12...
Cantlay moving clear
Justin Rose v Patrick Cantlay 3UP (11)
Rose is just faltering in this third match and is just one-under-par for his round so far. Another birdie for Cantlay comes at the 11th and the American is well in control of that encounter.
Hatton pegged back
1UP Tyrrell Hatton v Brian Harman (9)
Jack Rathborn reporting from Marco Simone:
“Hatton’s 14 ft putt to stay 2UP won’t turn, a furious reaction as Harman pegs him back, the American already heading to the steps to navigate his way to the 10th before Hatton can even recover his ball. This match appears decisive for Europe given the only blue after this match is all the way down to MacIntyre.”
Hovland moves four clear
4UP Viktor Hovland v Collin Morikawa (12)
Hovland is stepping on Morikawa’s through with a clinic in matchplay golf. Back-to-back birdies - seven in total now - as he moves 4up in his match with Morikawa.
That could be the first European point on the board today.
McIlroy restored three-hole lead
3UP Rory McIlroy v Sam Burns (10)
A real unforced error from Burns once again as he leaves himself work to do to save his par. The American is unable to make the putt and McIlroy’s birdie is enough to see him move back to three up.
Koepka and Spieth charging
Spieth with a monstrous drive onto the short par four and an eagle putt form the American has him in control against Shane Lowry. Koepka also taps in for his par a few holes ahead to win the 8th against Aberg.
Those two are both 3up in those matches.
Back-to-back holes for Rahm
1UP Jon Rahm v Scottie Scheffler (13)
What a couple of holes from Rahm as a stellar iron into the par-three 13th gives him a kick-in birdie. Scheffler’s response is a good one, but the World No.1’s birdie putt races to the right of the hole and the Spaniard is ahead in this match once again.
Homa nudges ahead
Matt Fitzpatrick v Max Homa 1UP (9)
This match has to and froed all throughout the front nine but it’s the American who takes the lead with a birdie on the par-five ninth as the pair head to the tenth tee.
MacIntyre leads in bottom match
1UP Robert MacIntyre v Wyndham Clark (2)
A nonchalant fist bump from the Scot as he rolls in a putt at the second to take the lead in his match with Clark. How he’d love to bring home a point to end Europe’s weekend.
Rahm pulls level again
Jon Rahm v Scottie Scheffler A/S (12)
Scheffler is in trouble off the tee as he’s forced to lay up. Rahm piles on the pressure with a picture-perfect fade into the back part of the green. He makes his par but the pressure is on Scheffler now.
For the half...not this time. He pulls his effort left of the hole and it’s back to all square in this top match.
