Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Lorie Kane, wearing the red-and-white colours of her native Canada, shot a 1-under 71 today and pulled into a tie with Sweden's Annika Sorenstam after three rounds of the du Maurier Classic in Aylmer, Quebec.

Lorie Kane, wearing the red-and-white colours of her native Canada, shot a 1-under 71 today and pulled into a tie with Sweden's Annika Sorenstam after three rounds of the du Maurier Classic in Aylmer, Quebec.

Sorenstam bogeyed the 18th hole for an even-par 72 and was left with Kane at 6-under 210, setting the two up for a final-round pairing on Sunday.

Tour rookie Diana D'Alessio, who shot 71, and Meg Mallon, who had a 72, were closest to the lead duo three shots back. Juli Inkster (74) and England's Trish Johnson (70) were at 214.

Counting Rosie Jones, who was at 215, only seven players were under par after three rounds on the 6,403-yard Royal Ottawa Golf Club course. Par was a good score for most players on the tight, thickly roughed course Saturday despite sunny skies and little wind.

Australian Karrie Webb's dream of claiming a $1 million bonus for winning three major tournaments in one year virtually ended Saturday. She bogeyed three of the final four holes, shot a 4-over 76 and trailed the leaders by nine strokes.

Sorenstam had shot consecutive 69s Thursday and Friday, but Kane was the steadier golfer Saturday.

Sorenstam had a chance to open a significant lead but failed. At 8-under and leading Kane by two shots, she missed a 4-foot birdie putt at the 10th. At the 11th, she had another downhill from 6 feet for another birdie but whacked the ball past the cup and had twice as far coming back for a par, a putt she missed to fall to 7-under.

Sorenstam came right back with a 6-foot birdie at No. 12, as Kane moved closer by sinking a curling birdie from 15 feet at the par-5 14th.

Both players missed putts of about 5 feet to bogey the par-4 15th, and Sorenstam bogeyed at the par-5, No. 18 to fall into a tie after driving near a tree and needing four shots to get on the green.

In all, Sorenstam had four bogeys and four birdies, while Kane had 15 pars.

Kane is Canada's most popular golfer. Her fans here have been rooting all the harder for her at Canada's only U.S. LPGA tour stop because du Maurier can no longer sponsor the tournament after this year because of promotional restrictions in Canada on tobacco products.

The event is scrambling for a new sponsor, but its status as an LPGA major is almost certain to lapse.

Johnson, from England, shot a 70 and Jones had a 71.

American Laura Philo, in a tie for third at 4-under after Friday's round, had a 77 Saturday and was at 217. ... Jocelyne Bourassa is the only Canadian to win the du Maurier, when the tournament was in its first year in 1973 and known as La Canadienne Golf Championship. Bourassa now is executive director of the du Maurier.
