From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

LISELOTTE NEUMANN from Sweden came out on top in a marvellous finish when she beat Britain's Laura Davies at the first hole of a sudden-death play- off to win the Hennessy Cup here at Refrath yesterday.

The two former US Open champions had finished in a tie at 280, eight under par, after Neumann had handed in a closing 68 and Davies a 70. They finished one stroke ahead of Helen Dobson, the winner of last week's European Masters.

Neumann sealed her seventh European Tour title when they returned to the 17th hole. She struck an eight-iron to three feet, then holed for a birdie after Davies had bunkered her second shot to take five.

Neumann had been two strokes behind Davies, the overnight leader, but she raced into the lead with an opening burst of four birdies in her first five holes to reach the turn in 32.

At eight-under Neumann was one stroke ahead of Davies who then guided putts of 10 and 12 feet for birdies at the 11th and 12th to move one stroke clear.

Neumann responded with a birdie at the 15th but could only manage a par five at the 18th, which left Davies needing a birdie four to force a tie.

Davies rose to the challenge magnificently. Bunkered in two, Davies hit a stunning recovery six inches short of the hole but it was Neumann who had the last say with her birdie to collect a pounds 30,000 winner's cheque.

Dobson had missed from four feet at the 18th for a closing six in her round of 66 but there was consolation for the Lincolnshire golfer. A hole in one at the eighth earned her a Peugeot 306 and pounds 14,000 for third place took her winnings for two weeks to pounds 36,500.
