From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

SPAIN'S Jose-Maria Canizares, one of the longest-serving professionals on the European Tour, and the Argentinian Ruben Alvarez were left battling neck and neck after the second round of the Tenerife Open yesterday.

The veteran Spaniard, 47 next week and on his 24th season on the Tour, initially soared clear of the field with some brilliant play at Golf del Sur. Setting out as one of the joint leaders at five under par after an opening 67, he picked up five more strokes in the first 10 holes to open up a four-shot lead.

At that stage, Canizares was four shots clear of Alvarez, who was threatening the course record of 63 set by Jose-Maria Olazabal when he won two years ago.

Canizares, meanwhile, slipped away to a 70, while Alvarez, who had a 65, moved up to share the lead with the Spaniard on 137.
