Reigns lost his title to Triple H at Royal Rumble in January, but after months of torture at the hands of The Authority, Reigns was able to finally get one over The Game and snatch back the title that he failed to win in the main event a year prior.
The match turned when Triple H’s wife, Stephanie McMahon, entered the ring to confront the referee, only for Triple H to dart out of the way and see his wife receive a spear from Reigns.
Reigns would then deliver two Superman Punches and a Spear to win the match, but a frosty reception from the WWE Universe made it clear that the former Shield member is yet to win over the fans.
One person who did win them over immediately though was Shane McMahon as he took on The Undertaker in a bid to win control of Raw from his own father and end The Phenom’s reign on the Grandest Stage of Them All in a Hell In A Cell match.
Undertaker dominated the fight until it spilled onto the outside of the cell, but it was McMahon’s decision to scale the height of the steel structure and leap off the top of it – only for ‘Taker to move – that left fans stunned.
After ‘Shane O’Mac’ has crashed through the announcers’ table leaving Undertaker to stare on in disbelief, Undetaker finished the match with a Tombstone Piledriver.
Brock Lesnar came through a gruelling and ill-tempered no holds barred street fight with Dean Ambrose that saw the Lunatic Fringe utilise kendo sticks, chairs and even a fire extinguisher.
The Beast proved too strong though, delivering a total of 13 suplexes to Ambrose – who at one point even tried to use a chainsaw – and after Ambrose landed backwards on a pile of chairs, Lesnar landed an F-5 on top of the same pile to pick up the win.
The Rock returned to the WWE to announce that the show had broken the WrestleMania record attendance with a new figure of 101,763 being announced, but he was soon confronted by the Wyatt Family.
As Bray Wyatt confronted ‘The Great One’, Rock challenged him to a fight, and after Erick Rowan duly stepped up, Rock delivered a Rock Bottom and won inside seven seconds. The Wyatt’s attacked as a result, but there was a shock twist as John Cena returned from injury to help his former WrestleMania rival.
Charlotte won a thrilling triple-threat for the new Women’s Championship – as unveiled by Hall of Famer Lita – with the Divas Championship and name being retired. Both Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks had chances to win, but like so many times before, Ric Flair proved to be the difference as he prevented Banks from returning to the ring and preventing Becky from submitting to the Figure Eight.
The League of Nations utilised the numbers game in their match with New Day to triumph, but it would come at a hefty cost. After New Day emerged from a 20-foot box of Booty-O’s, they went about taking the fight to Sheamus, Rusev and Alberto Del Rio, with King Barrett watching on in close proximity.
Each time New Day tried to take the upper hand, they would lose a man with first Big E and then Kofi Kingston taken out of the match, leaving Xavier Woods to fend for himself. He rolled Sheamus up for a pin, but when he lurched towards the ropes after the Irishman kicked out, Barrett delivered a Bullhammer to allow Sheamus to land the Brogue Kick and end the match.
However, after Barrett bragged of their standing as the greatest faction ever, a trio of Hall of Famers stunned the WWE Universe as Shawn Michaels, Mick Foley and Stone Cold Steve Austin came out to attack the League of Nations. The New Day attempted to join in the celebrations, leading to Woods receiving a Stunner and triggering boozy celebrations on Stone Cold’s behalf.
Chris Jericho emerged successful in his battle with fan favourite AJ Styles after he outsmarted his former tag-team partner to land a Codebreaker as Styles flew towards him.
NXT star Baron Corbin was left the last man standing in the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal after eliminating Kane, having already seen NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal enter the match and battle with Big Show until the pair were eliminated by all the other Superstars.
On the WrestleMania Kick-Off Show, Team Total Divas got things underway as Paige, Alicia Foxx, Eva Marie, Natalya and Brie Belle united to take on Team B.A.D & Blonde in Tamina, Naomi, Summer Rae, Emma and Lana.
Paige took the brunt of the attack before she managed to tag in Brie, who took the fight to Lana and Naomi in particular and picked up the win by pinning the latter, before she was joined in the ring by her sister, Nikki, who made a surprise return.
The Dudley Boyz also got a taste of their own medicine, as The Usos defeated the veteran tag team before landing a double splash through a pair of tables. US Champion Kalisto held on to his title after beating Ryback on the pre-show.
