Reigning world match racing champion Ian Williams regained winning form in Korea today to make it through to the final of the third grand prix of the world match racing series against Italy’s Paolo Cian tomorrow.
Cian beat quadruple Olympic medal winner Ben Ainslie, winner of the German grand prix, who faces Williams’ victim, Bjorn Hansen of Sweden, in the third-place decider.
Mixed conditions faced the fleet of seven starting the eighth, 1,000-mile leg of the Volvo round the world race as they left Galway to round the Fastnet Rock and head for the English Channel. Sweden’s Ericsson 4 leads overall, but just one point separates second-placed Telefonica Blue of Spain and the American yacht Puma and the Straits of Dover is a potential trap as they head for Marstrand, Sweden.
