US grab crown from Argentina in Spain
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.By just two points, the Americans grabbed back the crown from Argentina as Terry Hutchinson in Quantum held on to beat Alberto Roemmers Jr’s Matador in the TP52 World Championship off Valencia, Spain.
Hutchinson had been the Audi MedCup and world champion in 2008 only to be pipped by Matador last year. Only one race could be sailed on the final day of this year’s worlds and the two boats were so far ahead of the rest that it came down to a private match race between the two. Matador was one place ahead at the finish, but Quantum’s three-point margin was enough to clinch the deal.
In Bermuda, the Argo-sponsored Gold Cup grand prix on the World Match Race Tour saw Ben Ainslie, who had only scraped through to the knockout phase, beat New Zealander Adam Minoprio in their quarter-final to put Team Origin in the final phase on Sunday.
