Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Wakefield have cancelled Terry Newton's contract, following his admission that he took human growth hormone. Newton was provisionally suspended for two years last week after becoming the first athlete in the world to be caught taking the banned substance. "This is a landmark in the fight against doping," said the chief executive of the UK Anti-Doping Agency, Andy Parkinson. He called the hormone "a substance that has previously gone undetected because it leaves the system fairly quickly."

Melbourne Storm are set to include English-born Gareth Widdop in their 17 for the World Club Challenge against Leeds. The 20-year-old was man of the match in the Storm's warm-up win over Harlequins but is unlikely to start. Leeds' main doubt is the winger, Scott Donald, who injured a shoulder in the win over Salford on Friday. Salford's Stuart Littler has been called before today's RFL disciplinary hearing charged with illegal use of the forearm on Leeds' Ryan Bailey. Catalan Dragons' Olivier Elima is also up, for a high tackle against St Helens.
