Thorman sets new best in York's record haul

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

York's Chris Thorman re-wrote a 106-year-old Challenge Cup record with 54 points against Northumbria University yesterday.

His four tries and 19 goals beat the 53 points George West scored for Hull KR in 1905. York's 132-0 victory in the third round tie was also a new Challenge Cup record.

In Super League yesterday, Wakefield's hard times continued with a 40-18 beating at Bradford. Trinity got off to a good start with Frankie Mariano's try giving them the lead, but were rarely in the contest after that. Craig Kopczak scored a career-first hat-trick of tries for the Bulls.

Either Warrington or Leeds could have gone top on points difference after their meeting on Saturday night. In the event, the Wolves' 40-24 victory was enough to put them third.

It all looked good for the Rhinos when they took an eight-point lead, but Warrington dominated after that. The only down-side for the Wolves was a knee injury that limited their captain, Adrian Morley, to 15 minutes on the pitch.

Leon Pryce lasted even less time than that in his comeback from injuries for St Helens at the Catalan Dragons, but Saints still won 22-16.

Wigan bounced back from their World Club Challenge defeat to remain unbeaten in Super League with a 32-16 victory at Salford. Thomas Leuluai stood out for the champions, but much of the attention was off the pitch, with Wigan sacking their Test centre Martin Gleeson without explaining why and the Salford coach, Shaun McRae, starting a month's sick-leave.

Elsewhere, two contrasting hundred per cent records went, with Hull winning their first match and Harlequins losing for the first time. An unusually sparse crowd of just over 10,000 saw Hull beat Crusaders 42-18, with Danny Tickle chipping in 16 points. Rhys Williams scored two tries for the well-beaten Welsh side.

Quins struggled against Huddersfield and were eventually ground down 18-10 as the Giants continued their good start to the season.
