From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

St Helens, the super League champions, had their Great Britain international Paul Sculthorpe to thank for victory over Wakefield.

Saints had lost two of their three previous away matches to the Wildcats and needed an injury-time try from Sculthorpe, which completed his hat-trick, to seal a 32-24 success. The win puts Ian Millward's men within two points of the leaders Bradford Bulls but they will need to tighten their defence ahead of Wigan's visit on Friday.

Huddersfield suffered their 17th successive Super League defeat, equalling their own unwanted record, going down 32-24 at home to Salford. The Giants found themselves in a similar predicament in the 1998-99 season.

In the Northern Ford Premiership the champions Leigh crashed to a surprise 36-4 defeat at Rochdale, with the home side scoring five second-half tries without reply. The first half was evenly contested, but after the break the Hornets were in a different class, with their superb cover defence and exciting attacking play deciding the day.
