Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Championship Grand Final was interrupted for 45 minutes by a fire under the West Stand at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, before being won in golden point extra-time by Halifax. Hundreds of Halifax fans came onto the pitch as smoke billowed out of a disabled toilet under the stand. Firemen inspected the scene before ruling that the game could continue, but only with the spectators in the West Stand evacuated to the other end of the ground.
At the time of the delay, 33 minutes in, Featherstone were leading 12-4. They might have been the best side in the division all season, but they were on the receiving end of the try of the season when Rob Worrincy went over 100 metres to score. Rovers hit back by scoring a second converted try that was almost as good as Worrincy's when Tom Saxton broke away and found Zac Hardaker in support.
When the outstanding Hardaker claimed his second, Rovers seemed to be in the clear, but Ben Black scored one and made one for Luke Brannigan. Four minutes from time, Steve Bannister crashed over and Lee Paterson landed the equalising goal.Ninety seconds into the added period, Ben Black landed a dramatic drop-kick to seal this extraordinary match.
*Oldham lost the Championship 1 final for a fourth year in a row, going down 25-4 to Oldham. Warrington Wizards won the first match of the day, beating Underbank Rangers 23-18.
