Racing: Catlin pounces late
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Mick Channon enjoyed a welcome change of fortune as last season's champion apprentice Chris Catlin delivered Imperial Dancer with a well-timed run to take the Festival Stakes at Goodwood yesterday. The 13-2 chance got up in the shadow of the winning post to deny the odds-on favourite Island House by a head.
Channon, who has been forced to rule his brilliant filly Queen's Logic out of the reckoning for the Irish 1,000 Guineas after she coughed, said of the winner: "He was third in the Greenham last season before we sent him to the German Guineas where he came back all wrong. There's no real reason why Steve [Drowne, stable's senior rider] wasn't on him. Chris comes and rides out for me twice a week and I am just trying to give all the lads a chance by putting them up when I can."
At Newcastle yesterday, Fatehalkhair gained the 19th win of his career. The 10-year-old, bought for only 1,900 guineas out of the Ben Hanbury stable by trainer Brian Ellison, is a most versatile individual, this seventh victory on the Flat adding to eight over hurdles and four over fences.
In France yesterday Frankie Dettori made all on the John Gosden-trained Music Club to win the Listed Prix de Melisande at Longchamp from the favourite Arme Ancienne.
Music Club, who started at 2.9-1 on her first outing since winning a Newmarket maiden in October, is likely to be aimed at the Prix de Diane (French Oaks) on 9 June.
