Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Serb’s defeat of Roger Federer in the semi-final means Murray cannot overtake him as world No 3 but the Scot, who beat Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina 6-1 5-7 6-2 in the other semi-final, said: “The last couple of times I played, I figured out a way to play him. I feel confident and I’ve had a really good run so far this year.” The 19-year-old Belarussian Victoria Azarenka won her first top-tier title by beating Serena Williams 6-3 6-1 in Miami. Higgins hits form in time

John Higgins hopes to secure his 20th ranking title in the China Open against Peter Ebdon at Point Palm today, writes Clive Everton.

Higgins trailed Ryan Day 6-4 in the semi-final but four consecutive frame-clinchers of 76, 64, 65 and 46 saw the twice world champion go 5-3 ahead. Victory arrived two frames later with his clearance of 110. Ebdon, who has not won a world-ranking title since the UK Championship in 2006, arrived in Beijing having won only two matches this season but he dismissed the world No 62 Stuart Pettman 6-1 yesterday. The last-four berth was a career best for Pettman.

Keatings swoops for silver

Dan Keatings earned a silver medal in the all-around event at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Milan. The 19-year-old from Corby went into the final as the top qualifier, but his overall score of 88.275 was narrowly beaten by Germany's Fabian Hambuechen.

Liverpool’s Daniel Purvis, 18, was seventh with 88.075 on his senior debut at European level. British Gymnastics’ technical director Eddie Van Hoof said: “Both our Dans have done a great job. The medal and the rankings show how we’re competing against and winning with the best in the world.
