Sport in Brief: Doubts over as Henson says 'I'm playing on'

Gavin Henson has responded to persistent rumours he will quit rugby by stressing his desire to return. "I fully anticipate returning before too long having overcome injuries that have been a recurring problem for nearly three years," said a statement.

The Ospreys admitted earlier this month that they did not know whether the Wales centre, 27, would return this season. The double Grand Slam winner has been hit by groin and ankle injuries. "I'm looking forward to getting on with my playing career as soon as I can," said Henson.

Everton snap up Ever

Everton have managed to obtain a work permit for Argentina international midfielder Ever Banega after a Home Office hearing. The 21-year-old will now complete a season-long loan deal from Valencia. Manager David Moyes said: "Ever is on a year's loan. If he's good we'll keep him, if not we can always send him back." Wigan, meanwhile, have signed French midfielder Mohamed Diame from Spanish side Rayo Vallecano on a three-year deal.

Blood row physio quits

Former Harlequins physio Steph Brennan has resigned from his role with England over his involvement in the fake blood substitution of Tom Williams. Brennan had already been suspended by the Rugby Football Union. He has been banned for two years from all worldwide competitions by the International Rugby Board after admitting his guilt over the incident.
