Goals by Susie Gilbert and Crista Cullen saw England come from behind to beat Germany 2-1 in the bronze medal play-off at the Champions Trophy in Nottingham.

Maike Stockel gave Germany the lead before Gilbert and Cullen translated England's dominance into victory as they claimed their first-ever Champions Trophy medal.

It was England's first bronze medal match and they attacked from the off but they went a goal down after nine minutes.

The German captain, Tina Bachmann, found Eileen Hoffmann in the English circle and Hoffman's flick-on sat up perfectly for Stockel to volley home past Beth Storry at chest height.

The hosts stepped up a gear at the start of the second half and it paid off when Gilbert volleyed home from Cullen's penalty corner. Cullen scored the winner when her penalty corner strike went through the legs of German keeper Barbara Vogel.

Head coach Danny Kerry said: "I thought there was only one team in it. Although we lost a scrappy goal, it was only a matter of time before we scored."
