Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Loughborough students, with England's assistant coach, Jason Lee, scoring twice, sprung the surprise of the day with a 4-3 win at Cannock in the EHL Premier Division yesterday. The leaders, Surbiton, were twice in arrears to struggling Hampstead and Westminster before the Surrey side got into their stride to win 4-2.

The defending League champions, Reading, got off to their usual quick start with goals from Ken Robinson and Jon Wyatt in the first seven minutes before relaxing and allowing Teddington back into the game as James Webber scored a hat-trick. A late surge by Reading, with penalty corner goals from Tom Bertram (2) and Jonty Clarke, saw them home 7-3.

In the battle of the relegated Premier teams at Chigwell, Darren Cheesman put Old Loughtonians 3-2 ahead after 19 minutes. Southgate's defence crumbled with Nick Thompson, Richard Springham and South African Gareth Tavares each scoring twice as the Old Boys won 8-2. Even at this early stage, their coach, Soma Singh, looks like winning Premier promotions in successive seasons.

Promoted Bowdon lead the Second Division after a powerful 5-0 win away to Blueharts at Hitchin. Nottingham are a point behind after losing 3-2 at home to Peterborough Town.
