From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Google have released their 'most searched' XI of the World Cup.

The usual suspects make the grade but there are some big omissions and a couple of surprise choices within the team.

Guillermo Ochoa

The Mexican goalkeeper hit the headlines after a string of brilliant performances between the sticks. An internet rumour that he had six fingers, and inevitable transfer links, will have propelled him above the likes of Julio Cesar, despite his shoot-out heroics.

Atsuto Uchida

The Japan full back has been linked with Arsenal after the departure of Bacary Sagna to Manchester City. But the Schalke man is set to voice a part in the new Pokemon movie - he will play a bellboy based on his likeness.

Gerard Pique

The Barcelona man has suffered from some horrible form in the last 12 months and was promptly dropped by Vicente del Bosque after the 5-1 drubbing by the Netherlands.

David Luiz

The floppy-haired defender's rash style is always eye-catching. But Luiz, the spitting image of The Simpson's character Sideshow Bob, was rumoured to have chopped off his famous hair, with images of a skinhead going viral.

Marcos Rojo

The Argentina left back's buccaneering performances have seen him become a target for Liverpool. He also performed a quite ridiculous 'Rabona' clearance (video below) against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Neymar

The poster boy for the tournament and Brazil's best player, Neymar has been a joy to watch so far. Rough treatment in the win against Chile mean he is now a doubt for the quarter-final against Colombia.

Bastian Schweinsteiger

The German metronome has been excellent after returning from injury in the heart of Joachim Low's midfield and he is continually being linked to join Louis van Gaal's Old Trafford revolution.

Andrea Pirlo

Father time has finally caught up with the seemingly ageless Italian midfielder. The 35-year-old has very likely made his final appearance at a major tournament after the Azzurri crashed out at the group stage.

Arjen Robben

Arguably the tournament's best player so far, Arjen Robben has earned great praise for his terrorising performances. However, the Dutchman has drawn scorn for his antics against Mexico, where he exaggerated minimal contact against the Central Americans to win a 94th minute penalty.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Clearly unfit for the competition, the world's best player failed to live up to expectations that he would take the World Cup by storm, scoring just once in three matches. Ronaldo was also thought to have cut a zig-zag into his hair in tribute to a young boy whose brain surgery he paid for - though this was untrue.

Lionel Messi

Messi's previous record in international tournaments failed to live up to the great expectations placed upon the Argentinian maestro. But he has blown all of those away, single-handedly dragging a lacklustre side into the knockout stages with four goals already.

Coach: Jurgen Klinsmann

The German has led the USA revolution into the knockout stages. 'Soccer' has never been so popular across the pond, with the draw against Portugal winning the highest ever ratings for a football match.

Notable exceptions

Roy Hodgson and the Failed Lions, top goalscorer James Rodriguez...
