This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The photo of sad Brazilian fan Clovis Acosta Fernandes weeping as he clutched his replica World Cup trophy following Brazil's defeat to Germany that shot round social media this morning suggested a man at his wit's end.

He seemed on the verge of trudging back to his house after the game and burn everything yellow and green in his house, shaking a fist at his gilded portrait of Luiz Felipe Scolari.

The truth is quite different, with another photo since emerging showing the fan, known as 'Gaucho da Copa', smiling as he hands his replica trophy to a German fan, reportedly being quoted as saying: "Take it to the final! As you can see, it is not easy, but you deserve it, congratulations!"

Fernandes is famous back home for his super fandom, having followed the Seleção wherever they go since 1990 and having attended seven World Cups, six Copa Americas, four Confederation Cups and one Olympics game – so I doubt he'll let one measly tournament dampen his passion for the team.

That being said it was a pretty crushing defeat, with Brazil losing 7-1 to Germany and conceding three goals in 76 seconds.

The trouncing has led to countless internet jokes at the Brazilians' expense, including highlights of the game being uploaded to adult websit Pornhub.
