James Rodriguez is to have a scan on the calf injury that has been plaguing him throughout the World Cup, with a decision on whether he will be fit to play England expected on Sunday.

The 2014 Golden Boot winner has struggled for full fitness in Russia after a recurrence of an issue that forced him out for a month of his campaign on loan at Bayern Munich last season.

He was withdrawn after just 30 minutes of the Colombians’ final group game, a 1-0 win over Senegal that sealed the top spot in Group H and put them on a collision course with Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions.

Should their talisman miss the round-of-16 clash then Colombia will likely lean on playmaker Juan Fernando Quintero, a former wonder-kid whose career had gone so off the rails that two years ago he was considering retirement.

Quintero has revived his career by returning to Colombia, with Independiente de Medellin, and then to Argentina where he plays for River Plate.

Real Madrid are one of the sides interested in signing Quintero after the World Cup with River Plate possessing an option to buy 50 per cent of his economic rights for £2.5m and sell him on immediately.

The 25-year-old midfielder is expected to cost around £12m, with plenty of teams ready to take that gamble.
