Yohan Cabaye could be set for a quick return to the Premier League after Manchester United reportedly joined the race to sign the frustrated Paris Saint-Germain midfielder.

The France international only returned to France from Newcastle in January this year, but he has struggled to force his way into the starting line-up under manager Laurent Blanc, whose preferred midfield trio is made up of Blaise Matuidi, Marco Verratti and Thiago Motta.

Cabaye was close to a move to Arsenal in 2013, but Newcastle rejected the £10m offer from the Gunners, a bid that led manager Alan Pardew to label the club “disrespectful” in their attempts to lure the Frenchman to the Emirates.

Manager Arsene Wenger remains a fan of Cabaye’s given his talent to create chances for other players in front of goal, but Arsenal are believed to be locked in a battle with Liverpool to convince Cabaye that a return to England would be in his best interests.

However, United are also said to be monitoring his situation, and with Louis van Gaal’s side struggling in the league, they could move for Cabaye as early as January to try and strengthen their campaign to finish in the top four and return to the Champions League.

PSG could be persuaded to sell Cabaye a year after his £19m-plus switch from the Magpies given that it would raise funds to move for players in positions that Blanc wants reinforcing.
