From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri has revealed that Liverpool tried to sign him during the summer, but Bayern would not sell.

"Liverpool made a bid for me before the World Cup but Bayern put their foot down and told me, 'We’re not going to sell you'," said Shaqiri.

"My contract runs until 2016 and I could possibly extend it. I will consider my decision during the winter break."

Shaqiri has failed to become a regular starter for the Bundesliga champions since signing from FC Basel in 2012.

He made only 17 league appearances for the club last season.

With the £75m sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, it was a busy period in the transfer market for Reds' manager Brendan Rodgers over the summer. He brought in nine additions, including Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic and, of course, Mario Balotell.

Shaqiri is expected to feature for Switzerland tonight in their Euro 2016 qualifying match against England.
